Toyota Safety Sense Explained: What is it?

Here at Lum’s Toyota in Warrenton, OR, every single one of our new Toyota vehicles comes standard with Toyota Safety Sense. It’s one of the reasons that the likes of the NHTSA and IIHS consistently give Toyota vehicles such excellent safety scores. But what exactly is it?

What is Toyota Safety Sense? What does it do?



Toyota Safety Sense

Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) are standard suites of safety features available on new Toyota vehicles. There are a few different configurations of Toyota Safety Sense, including:

  • TSS-2.0
  • TSS-2.5
  • TSS-P

Each version has a different set of features. To see which TSS configuration and the exact features a vehicle has, check out the Toyota Safety Sense page. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on the vehicle you’re interested in. It’ll show you each feature and give you a breakdown on how the feature works.

What are some of the common features?

While each configuration differs in features, there are a few core features that every TSS configuration includes. Those features are:

  • Pre-collision system
  • Pedestrian detection
  • Dynamic radar cruise control
  • Lane departure alert
  • Automatic high beams
  • Lane tracing assist
  • Road sign assist
